Installing a New Heating System in Your Home

Blog

When considering a new heating system for your home, it is essential to look at all the options and determine what is going to work best for your situation. Working with an HVAC contractor to help decide what kind of heating system installation is going to work for you and is within your budget.

1. Fuel Availability

One of the essential considerations, when you are thinking about new heating system installations, is the fuel available in your area. If you are considering a gas furnace, but propane is extremely expensive, it might make more sense to look at systems that run on heating oil or electricity.

In some areas, natural gas is available from the city utility department. The cost may be lower than heating oil or electricity and is more convenient than propane because there is no storage or delivery to worry about. The contractor handling your heating installation may be able to tell you what other people in the area are using and why, so discuss the options before you settle on a heating system for your home.

2. Hot Water and Heat

Heating your home with a new hot water boiler is something you may want to consider while thinking about your heating system installation. Some of the advantages of a boiler include the ability to heat the home and the domestic hot water as well. Because the boiler works so efficiently and quickly, it is very uncommon to run out of domestic hot water in your home, even if you like long showers or are running the dishwasher and the shower at the same time.

Domestic water is a separate system from the boiler's heating side, so the two never affect each other. The heating side of the unit is a closed-loop, and while the water for both is heated by the same firebox and heat exchanger, the plumber remains separate. Most boilers run on #2 heating oil, which is plentiful in many areas of the country, and the price is not high.

3. Know Your Budget

It is essential to know your budget for a new heating system installation before you start looking at systems. The cost can affect the system you choose, but remember that some options are cheaper upfront but may cost more to run overtime.

Talk with your heating system contractor about the differences in the heating systems and the efficiency of each overtime. Sometimes spending a little more upfront can save you a lot of money over the long term and might be worth going a little over budget.
