Prevent Your Air Conditioning System From Freezing Up This Summer: 3 Tips

Blog

A frozen air conditioner may sound like a good thing - it's cold, right? - but it isn't a good thing at all. The temperature inside your house is going to go up rather than down, and it could get hot quickly in your home if it's hot outside. The air conditioning unit itself doesn't freeze, but the evaporator coil inside your house will. The freezing of the coil will block air flow into your home, which is why the temperature inside your home is going to go up (rather than down). To prevent your system from freezing up, there are things you can do. Read on for some helpful tips.

1. Change The Air Filter

The air filter in your system cleans your indoor air by trapping allergens, but it also cleans the air going into the evaporator coil. If those allergens are allowed into the evaporator coil, it can cause a clog which will result in the freezing of your system. If you notice the temperature in your home going up, check your air filter first. This filter needs to be changed every other month with a new filter. It's a quick and easy task that doesn't cost too much money, but failing to change this filter can cost you a lot of money in repairs.

2. Clean The External Unit

The external unit outside of your home can get clogged with all types of debris. This debris will eventually build up and block the flow of air to your system. A blockage of air can result in your evaporator coil freezing up. To clean the unit all you need is a garden hose. Simply spray down the unit from the outside in and then from the inside out. Give it a hose down throughout the summer season to prevent your system seizing up.

3. Don't Set The Thermostat Too Low

Setting your thermostat to 66oF or below can cause your system to run excessively which can result in your system freezing up. Don't set the thermostat below 68oF even on the hottest days of the year. Your system will have to work too hard to keep up with that temperature and will eventually freeze. If it still feels too hot in your home try closing the curtains and blinds to the sunlight, cook outside or use a crock pot, take cool showers, or turn on a fan to help cool you down.
